When a woman donates her eggs to another woman so that she can conceive as part of an assisted reproduction treatment that is known as egg donation. The oocytes from the donor are combined with spermatozoa from the recipient couple to produce embryos.These embryos are then transferred to the recipient couple in order to achieve pregnancy.
The screening process
Egg donors go through an initial screening to determine their ability to produce eggs. Only donors applicants who pass the fertility screening steps can be matched with a recipient couple. After that, the donor is tested for several factors including blood type, infectious diseases, drug use and overall health. The donor’s family history will be assessed through blood tests to be aware of possible hereditary diseases or genetic disorders like sickle cell anemia, thalassemia etc. after the completion of above tests, the donor meets a psychologist to ensure that she is aware of the risks and benefits of the procedure and fully understands what the process entails.
